When your child wants to have a play date with another child and you find out that that child doesn’t want to have a play date with yours, it can be a very difficult situation to deal with. Primarily the difficulty is that you’re not the only one and your child is not the only one involved in this – now it’s another child and another parent. And their response can also affect your child. So be prepared as a parent to talk to your child about some of what they might hear from the other child and from the other parent. That being said, as a parent, what I suggest to you is you don’t need to fully disclose why you’re not having a play date with the other child. Let your child know that there are other friends who actually do want to have a play date with you and that you’re looking forward to putting together a play date with that child. If your child is still having a hard time with that, you need to talk to your child about what they’re feeling and why they’re feeling that way, so that they can find resolve. You don’t want to close the book completely if your child hasn’t closed the book, because then your child has an unresolved issue that will carry on with them later on.
