Students from a low income household have a harder chance of succeeding in college. That's just the fact of life. That doesn't mean it's not overcomable, but you have to know that going in. The New York Times reported that 74% of the students in the most competitive colleges came from upper income households. While only 3% came from the lower quartile of income. So the odds are against you. Now, how do you overcome those odds? Well, there's several ways. A, you have to make your grades. You absolutely have to make your grades and you have to understand that while at one time you might have gotten some consideration for your minority status, that's not going to happen anymore. So you have to make your grades. And you have to take AP classes. You have to do that. You have to work harder than the rich kids. You have to work smarter than the rich kids. And you have to apply to more colleges than the rich kids and you have to meet your professors and get them on your side. You have to develop mentors that will be on your side. It can be done. If you're not fluent enough in English, you take tutoring classes. If you need help in math, you take math tutoring classes. These are all available. But you can go to college. You can go to upper tier college. You can go to a competitive college and you can graduate. Even if you're not from a rich family but it's going to require more effort. If you do, you have set your family, your whole family, your whole future family, you have set them on a different course because education is the new currency of the wealthy and you can change your entire family;s future with your college degree.
