Nobody wants the kid in aisle 5 falling out in the middle of the grocery store – nobody wants that. There is nothing more embarrassing than you being the mother of that kid and all of us can identify. So there’s some specific things that you need to do to cut down on the chances of it happening. One is never take your child to the store tired, because we all know what happens when your kid is tired – they act the heck up. Never take them to the grocery store hungry, because you’re walking around the grocery store and a hungry kid is a horrible kid. You want them to be full and satisfied, so that when they get to the grocery store, they’re not worried about how fast they can leave to go get their peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Another way to get your kid to act right in the grocery store is to give them chores, let them help you with the list. “Okay, we have to get milk, we have to get cereal, we have to get lunch meat, we have to get bread. Here’s the list. I want you to check it off when we get it. And when we see it – you know what kind of bread that we get – so when we get to the bread aisle, you have to pick the one that we use and then you have to take it out and you have to put it in the basket.” Distraction is key. When they’re distracted by that list and they’re distracted by having to pick something out and feel like they’re helping instead of bored to death while you figure out which one of the cereals to get in the cereal aisle, they tend to act better.
