There's a huge challenge that comes with raising black sons. I have a son who's almost 20. He's brilliant. he's in college studying to be an engineer. And back home, someone may see him walking down the street. His pants may be hanging down a little bit too much for someone's taste. He may be listening to his iPod and not paying too much attention to his surroundings. And because he's 6'1", 270 pounds, you might have some kind of idea that he might do something to you or that he may be up to no good, just because he's a black man in America. And so we're constantly talking to him about how to present himself, how to make people understand that he's brilliant, he's beautiful, he's kind, he's honest, he's smart. That conversation comes from having a good strong dad in the household, who's, at 46, has had to deal with that all of his life. That comes from his mom instilling some wonderful advice about how to move through the world. And that comes from me, his stepmom, trying to talk to him constantly about how to present himself to the world that not only makes other people comfortable but allows him to be who he is.
