Children really need down time during the course of the day at school. There are actual laws in place so that workers get time away from their desk or away from their job, 15 minutes two times a day, half an hour for lunch, so that they can have that down time to make sure that they can be productive; right? So why do we expect that children can go eight hours during the course of the day with nothing but a 20 minute quiet lunch. Children need to be out on the playground. They need to be able to get that time to unwind, to get some fresh air, to go and hop on the monkey bars, to play tag, to learn how to socialize with other people. If your school doesn't have recess, there are a few things you can do. Do your research first and make sure that you understand all the different things that go into why recess is good. I mean, there are plenty of resources online that you can tap into to get that information, facts on why children need recess. Then you gather up your mom friends and you all get together and you go down to the PTA, you go down to the school meetings with the principal and you let them know, my child deserves recess and we really want them to have it. If that doesn't work, take it on down to the local school district. As a group of moms together, armed with that information and armed with the resources that you find, armed with your group of friends, you can go and make change. Make sure that somebody understands that your child needs at least 20 minutes of fresh air in order to continue during the course of the day.
