There's nothing more intimidating than that little, tiny chair in a parent-teacher conference, right? You're sitting down in this little chair and you're waiting for the teacher to tell you something about your kid that's horrible like their grades suck or they're in trouble or the principal probably saw them one too many times this year. The fact of the matter is is that they are humans. And everybody involved in your child's education has one thing in mind, one thing in common. They want the best for your child. Understanding that they're human and that they, too, want the best for your child opens a door, I think, for parents in making them understand that it's okay to go to the principal's office and talk to them about your child's education and what you need to do to help them further themselves. Going to the principal's office doesn't always have to be about negative. It doesn't always have to be about getting your child out of trouble. I go to the principal's office to talk to her name to name, face to face, so that she understands that I'm intimately involved in making sure that something goes right for my daughter in the classroom. And once you're able to go in and have that first person to first person conversation, not only with the principal but with the teachers, it just makes it so much easier. You get more relaxed about how to make this work for your kids. It's a wonderful thing.
