Schema therapy is the approach that I use in psychotherapy. It was developed by Dr. Jeffrey Young and it was designed specifically for challenging treatment populations, narcissism being one of them. And we've been very excited about the effects of schema of therapy and working this population. What that means is that we help the narcissist to look more deeply at understanding the origins of the narcissism. So we're paying a lot attention through the work in the therapy relationship that becomes like the little microcosm of the world out there. This relationship although it's quite different from other relationships, it's still a relationship. It becomes the place where we can practice telling the truth. Communicating from a more vulnerable place in the God. Understanding with some empathy and some compassionate times for their experiences that formed this personality style. I'd like to say to them, "you know, t's not your fault but it is your responsibility". You have a responsibility to your children. You have a responsibility to your family. And if you want to take advantage of this opportunity, there's a way for you to be able to be more comfortable in your own skin because they're not. So often they're just not comfortable on their skin which why they have all these masks that they wear and all of this coping modes that becomes so off living to everyone out there. The primary focus in Schema therapy especially with narcissist is re-parenting. It's about meeting needs. It's about discovering the needs that were inadequately met like being loved unconditionally and feeling good about yourself for who you are and getting that need met in the therapy relationship and through experiential strategies that we use in the model.
