My Golden Nugget Advice
Don't get into a contest of wills with kid, it brings you down to thier level & creates disrespect.
Start out early, & don't be afraid to let them hurt (not injure) themselves, after you warned them. Then ask if they think you told them not to do that to be mean, or if they think that you were trying to prevent them from being hurt. After they answer, ask "So next time I tell you not to do something, are you going to obey me?"
Teach them you are looking out for them. That brings obediance.
