The role of a grandparent is really very delicious. I am a grandparent now of five grandchildren. I really understand why everyone loves grandparenting. There are some important things that I think grandparents need to understand. The most critical is that grandchildren are, what I call OPC, other people's children. They are not your children. You had your chance. The most effective grandparenting is supporting the parenting directions of your son or your daughter and the in-law. If you do not, you will find there is going to be a lot of stress in that relationship with that extended family. To the degree, you may have different ideas of parenting, but there are new, modern ideas that your children will want to incorporate for your grandchildren. I think that you have to be respectful. The nice thing about grandparenting is that you generally have a lot of time and energy. You are not busy in your careers. You are not busy in a lot of other activities. Grandparents have the opportunity to give absolute quality time to their grandchildren. You are the one that can convey the legacy. You are the one with all the stories. You are the individual that can help transmit family values. I think that is one of the more important roles that grandparents play.
