Transcription:
Creating independence around homework is a very important responsibility for a parent unless you want to go to the second grade and the fourth grade and the seventh grade all over again. Children will naturally try to suck you in partly because maybe they do not have confidence in the assignment and also because they may want to spend time with you. But this is a dangerous thing to do. Homework should be the independent functioning of your child and what you do is encourage the child that they can do it independently. If a child comes to you and says I haven´t the vaguest idea what I should write my report about. Instead of jumping in and giving him three great suggestions, your task to be a responsible parent is to say I bet you could think of something all by yourself. Why don´t you go to your room, come up with two or three ideas and then let´s share it with me? So what you really want to do is every time a child tries to involve you is disengage and encourage the child to be able to function independently.
