Different parenting styles are often a source of great distress among parents and one of the issues that you didn't discuss before you decided to have children--what is your parenting styles. But, to be the most effective parent, it is really important that you have a partnership, and that partnership needs to be discussed calmly, not in the heat of the battle. So if you and your partner come from very different parenting backgrounds, this is a time that is very often helpful to go to a counselor, to deal with somebody in the field of parenting, so that together you can develop a unified parenting approach. It is not helpful to struggle, to have a power struggle between husband and wife over this issue because no one will win. This is the time when an an outside neutral party is often the most effective of helping parents create a unified parenting program.
