All parents are concerned about self-esteem since it is a topic that is so often discussed. It is the critical issue of effective parenting. You don't need to be overwhelmed with this concept because, basically, self-esteem boils down to two very important ingredients. The first is, does my child feel loved unconditionally? Not that I have to be a great student or social director or athlete, but that I'm loved just because of who I am. The second is, am I competent? Are you giving messages to the child that tells them they are competent? Those two ingredients; I'm loved unconditionally and I have a sense of competence, will create a sense of self-esteem. You can judge ever interaction with your child with these two criteria. When you leave your child, would that child have felt they are loved unconditionally and they felt that they are competent. If the answer is, yes, you are well on the road to create self-esteem.
