Red flags for substance abuse

Teenagers that are beginning the experimentation with substances or may have already become addicted, usually give us clues if we are alert to it. Most notably there is a decrease in grades. Also, a big change in terms of the peer group that they are becoming involved with. In my experience, when I was a school psychologist, used to pick up a guidance folder. I had a student who was a very strong student, and suddenly the grades dropped. I would ask that student, "What are you taking?" They would look at me shocked that I would ask them and make that diagnosis. Those are the two major correlations. If a child is sleeping, if a child appears easily agitated, if the child's grades drop precipitously, and if there is a big change in their social environment. Those are all red flags that we are probably in the field of experimentation.
