Characteristic that help individuals run a business, often are in direct conflict with the most effective ways of dealing with the family. By this I mean, when you are running a business and you are the boss, you are used to talking and the other people listen. You are used to being in control and saying what you want, not necessarily always getting feedback, and expecting the behavior to follow. However, when you come back into the family, the role is different. Now you are part of a collaborative process. It's not a boss and workers. It is a parent and child. There has to be an interaction. You have to take off that hat from the talker and the director, and now I'm going to be the listener. It is really only in that listening mode that you connect with another individual. You connect with another individual because you are really willing to hear where that other individual is coming from. You don't necessarily do that in a work environment. That's a difficult transition, very often, with very powerful business individuals.
