Teaching children self-control

In order to raise a child that is not self-indulgent, you have got to permit the child to function independently. It's the whole key; are you going to be a good parent or a responsible parent? I think that parents are often confused, because they think that they have to answer every need and every whim of a child upon demand. They have to service a child in a variety of ways, when a child can really function independently. That starts from even a young child. That young child should be permitted to dress and clothe and feed themselves as soon as they are physically able to do it. As a child gets older, the child has to be able to make their own decisions. A child has to be able to delay gratification, so they are able to be accomplished. Children that are self-indulged, have adults around them that are attending to their every need and every whim, so naturally, the child starts to think that they are the center of the universe.
