When you are preparing your teen for a breakup, the most important thing to do as a parent is make sure your teenager is an active participant in the process. When we talk to young people, we want them to know that they have options. If they are going to leave, doing it in person might be important to them. Maybe the do not want to do it in person. So ask some questions like, "Tell me how you want to do it. Have you thought about how you want to do it?" Ask them, "What do you feel comfortable doing?" A lot of time in breakups, you don't have to do it in person. There is text, or you can email. You can call that person and say you want to end the relationship. As a parent, your job is to ask them how they want to end the relationship, but also start thinking about some of those things that happen after the breakup. Is the partner on Facebook? Is the partner on Twitter? Is the partner prepared for what happens after a breakup? One thing that happens after a breakup is that other person may continue to try and contact them. See if they are able to not be on Facebook. It might be a good idea to delete them from your phone. Asking friends and family not to check you in on Facebook because it just gives the person more information about where they are because they can contact them.
